Firmly entrenched in the phablet land is Sony’s Xperia XA Ultra. With a 6 inch screen, the phone is a palm-stretching landmass that is quite certainly aimed at a very particular cross-section of market – that of youth.

A large-screen version of its forthcoming Xperia UA handset, with a powerful front facing camera, it is not hard to see what this phone is all about.

Beyond the large dimensions, the phone is yet another familiar Sony face. The phone is built on the same rectangular design philosophy, protected by a solid, metal frame and extra-slim side bezels that give it the last stroke of flourish.

The volume buttons and the power key are placed in easily accessible spots, even when the phablet is held with one hand. At 190 grams, the phone might be a little too heavy for some.

With a USD 370 price tag, the phone runs on MediaTek’s lowest-end Helio line processor from 2015, the octa-core Helio P10. The phablet, however, manages to run smoothly, quite to the surprise of most critics. Paired with that processor, the phablet has 3 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage (expandable by an additional 200 GB).

The phone runs on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow and has a 2,700 mAh battery. On the connectivity side, you get dual-SIM card slots, 4G LTE support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1 and USB OTG.

On the camera front, the phone uses a 21.5 megapixel rear camera with a 1/2.4 inch sensor with phase detection auto-focus and an LED flash. The front camera is the game changer, though; it comes with 16 megapixel 1/2.6 inch type sensor with autofocus, OIS, and even an LED flash.

Both the cameras can take 1080p videos which look fairly good and stable. The new camera app is clean and easy to use and offers a variety of modes, filters, and tweaking tools.

It’s been a while since Sony last did anything big on the software side, mostly opting for minor updates to visuals and a new feature here and there. While the overall Xperia experience has by now become quite familiar, this one gives you a few fun and new things.

Quite like Apple’s iOS, this one is letting you conveniently look up apps without venturing into the app drawer by swiping down on the screen. It also offers a one-handed mode, which can be activated by swiping up from the bottom right corner of the screen; the re-sized interface can be moved around or enlarged.

What might be a deal breaker for a few in the world who take fingerprint scanners as holy grail –  the Ultra is yet another Sony phone to skip on including fingerprint scanning.  Unlike the Xperia X and X Performance, the fingerprint scanner isn’t available outside of the U.S. either, and given that devices in the same or lower price brackets now feature fingerprint scanners, Sony probably shouldn’t have skimped.

All in all, the phone can be considered a buy if you’re looking for a phablet with a host of ‘okay’ features and a really powerful camera. There might be other phones that do better on sheer performance in this range, but Sony seems to be aiming to tap into a specific niche market with this device.
