Samsung recently launched two of its much-awaited flagship phablets – the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. Both these launches come with a bunch of new and exciting features and accessories making the duo this year’s most interesting twins.

Breaking free from all boundaries the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ come with a beautiful, bezel-free design. The 6.2 inch Super AMOLED infinity display on the Galaxy S8+ is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5 and the curved edges make the glass seamlessly flow to the metal sides, and then back onto more curved glass. Consequently, the device gets significantly more screen space due and the 18.5:9 aspect ratio brings a whole new level of user interaction to the device.

Before the official launch, rumours and leaks had already given away a lot of information about the device, so it might not be news to some, but it’s still worth talking about.
The S8 and S8+ come without any physical home buttons. It’s been replaced by a capacitive button that’s embedded within the screen and supported by haptic feedback to provide a real-world feel to this digital button. If you’re wondering what happened to the fingerprint sensor that used to be on the home button on the front, well, it’s now found a new seating place at the back of the phablet, next door to the rear camera.

The phablet is a business phone too, and it carries scaled-up security features owing by way of multiple biometric functions.
The Galaxy S8+ carries an Iris Scanner on the front which enables you to protect all your sensitive data the device from prying eyes. Since no two irises have the same pattern, it is impossible to replicate the Iris Scan or to bypass the security feature.

Additionally, Facial Recognition helps unlock the S8+ without having to use any physical interactions. It’s convenient, but not always unhumorous to use (especially in public).

Of course, there’s the fingerprint sensor around the back, which does the regular security stuff, with alarming speed. Reaching it could be a challenge at times though, especially when using the device one-handed – even more so, for those who are left-handed.

Another exciting introduction on the Galaxy S8 Plus is that Samsung has also got its new personal assistant dubbed as Bixby.
Bixby with its three different branches can make your life easier and fun.
Bixby Voice, something on the lines of Apple’s Siri or Amazon’s Alexa can take voice commands and for the time being is limited to performing certain phone related tasks only. But Samsung assures its users that the personal assistant would evolve over time to become more efficient.

We’ll run Bixby by you in detail in our review of the S8+.

Meanwhile, let’s take you through the spec sheet of the Samsung Galaxy S8+.

Under the hood, the Galaxy S8+ runs on Qualcomm’s newest Snapdragon 835 or Samsung’s own Exynos chip (this depends on the region you are in).
It sports an octa-core set up constituting a 2.35 GHz quad & a 1.9 GHz quad, 64-bit processor as opposed to an octa-core 2.3 GHz Quad & 1.7 GHz Quad, 64-bit processor on the Galaxy S8.

Both the S8’s run on 4 GB of RAM and carry 64 GB internal storage that can be expanded up to 256 GB using the microSD card slot.
With Samsung Cloud, you can always store important data such as images, videos, and apps, safely in Samsung Cloud and view it on other devices.

This massive phablet (it’s not really massive in size – surprisingly so, but screen size is still huge) is backed up by a 3,500 mAh battery as opposed to the 3,000 mAh battery on Galaxy S8. The hassle of wires can also be put behind as the new Samsung Galaxy S8+ supports wireless charging.

The mention of battery and Samsung together is a lethal combination as was evident in case of the exploding batteries of Samsung Galaxy Note7. Of course, Samsung wants the world to get over the debacle and to win back its customers trust, hence it’s implemented a “robust eight-point battery safety check” for all battery manufacture now.

Interestingly enough, the Samsung Galaxy S8+, unlike other high-end smartphones onboard these days, does not sport dual rear camera. Instead, the Galaxy S8+ sports a regular 12 megapixel sensor with Optical Image Stabilisation and an 8 megapixel selfie camera round the front ( with f/1.7 aperture and auto-focus).

In case you want to have a 360-degree view of your surroundings, then Samsung has the perfect offering for you – Gear 360, which enables you to live broadcast 360-degree videos on Facebook or YouTube.

Accessories that perfectly complement the S8 Plus include the all new, Samsung DeX which is a separate dock that displays your phone apps and media on a monitor. Basically, a bigger version of your smartphone’s display. Obviously, you would need a monitor, keyboard and mouse in addition to the dock and cables in order to make this happen.

Further, get ready to have an immersive gaming experience as you delve deeper all thanks to the Gear VR that delivers refined graphics.

Samsung will also include premium earbuds from AKG, a brand it acquired when it bought Harman International recently. This naturally indicates that all the hullabaloo about the 3.5 mm headphone jack being removed is wrong – so, calm your rampaging heart – yes, there is a headphone jack!

The S8+ is the first smartphone to come with Bluetooth 5.0 that offers twice the speed and four times the range as Bluetooth 4.2, meaning you’ll be able to maintain connection up to about 800 feet (240 meters) away from the phone with compatible devices.

We’ll cover a lot more of the frills and bits of the Galaxy S8+ in our detailed review in a few days.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus will be available for pre-order starting 30th March and will hit the shelves on April 21.

Indian prices haven’t been announced yet, however I’d expect it to be in the region of INR 60,000 or so. Gold and Blue are the only colour options expected to be launched internationally, while the U.S. market may also get a Silver variant.
