Despite being one of the major proponents for the ever increasing popularity for Android globally, Samsung historically faltered in one critical aspect – product design. Panned for poor material selection, faux-materials, suspect build quality and even unbecoming screen quality, Samsung needed to pull off a winner, of its own accord. That meant reevaluating its entire design ethos.

Come April 2015, Samsung’s 2015 pinch hitter, the Galaxy S6 did exactly that. Proving that Samsung had it in them to create a great looking device, to use premium materials (not cheap plastic) and live up to expectations. The S6 did all of that, pretty well in fact. But it was panned, its few drawbacks (clearly linked to the premium unibody design) oft-cited by some hard-to-please critics. It suffered from fixed storage as it had no capability to expand memory externally, a lacklustre battery worsened by the inability to pull out the battery, and no waterproofing capabilities.

Then Samsung decided to surprise the world, by listening to those critics and making a unibody smartphone that had expandable memory, was waterproof and yet, a great looking phone.

The Galaxy S7 thus is an ode to those critics, and proof, that determination can force innovation.

There’s only one drawback though – it looks drastically similar to it’s predecessor, and to an iPhone and an HTC One!

Oh, well.

Let’s do a hardware run-up then. The Galaxy S7 features a 5.1 inch Super AMOLED display with a staggering Quad HD resolution and a pixel density of 577 ppi! This is an incredibly beautiful display unit which offers nice colour reproduction and a sharp contrast. Text looks extremely sharp and clear.
A new piece of tech Samsung unveiled with the S7 was the ‘Always On Display’. What this means is that even when your device is in Standby mode, it will show a clock, calendar or an image, so you won’t have to constantly turn on your phone’s display to see what time it is. Impressive as it sounds, it might end up using quite a lot of juice. There’s a coating of Corning Gorilla Glass 4 on top (as well as at the back) to keep this device safe from accidental scratches and what not.

The Galaxy S7 emerges from the box, running Android 6.0 Marshmallow, with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI running things on top. TouchWiz has evolved significantly over the past couple of years… Gone are the cartoony icons that were an eyesore, to say the least, and now the UI is very similar to Google’s Material Design ethos.

The Galaxy S7 is the first smartphone of 2016 that is powered by Qualcomm’s latest chipset – their quad-core Snapdragon 820 chipset with Adreno 530 dedicated graphics processor, both supported by 4 GB of RAM.
We’re yet to see the true capabilities of this processor, especially the shortcomings (if any). Check back in a bit. We’ll put it through its paces, for you.

Storage options: 32 or 64 GB of internal storage, expandable upto 200 GB via a microSD card slot (that uses the SIM 2 slot).

At the back is a 12 megapixel camera with an f/1.7 aperture, phase detection autofocus, OIS and LED flash. This camera flaunts features such as geo-tagging, simultaneous 4K video and 9 megapixel image recording, touch focus, face/smile detection, auto HDR and panorama. It can also record 2160p videos as well as 1080p videos with relative ease.

At the front is a 5 megapixel snapper, also with an f/1.7 aperture, dual video call and auto-HDR.

The camera UI in itself has been drastically improved and clicking an image has never been this fast! The point-to-shoot functionality on the S7 is much, much faster than that of the S6.

Other features include: a highly accurate fingerprint sensor embedded into the Home button, fast battery charging (60% in 30 min), wireless charging and a non-removable 3000 mAh battery unit.

Oops! Almost forgot, this little dynamo is completely capable of functioning under water; in fact its rated as IP68 certified. That means per official tests, the Galaxy S7 can stay under 1.5 meters of water for upto 30 minutes! There’s more – thanks to some pretty impressive water resistive techniques, the phone’s ports can remain open, unlike the Galaxy S5’s reliance of rubberised cover flaps.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 is available in four attractive colors: Black, White, Gold, Silver.
