Continuing with last year’s trend of releasing variants of their annual flagship refresh, Samsung released the Galaxy S7 edge alongside 2016’s banner smartphone, the Galaxy S7. And it’s not the same wine in a new casket.

Released at MWC 2016, the Galaxy S7 edge features a 5.5 inch Quad-HD Super AMOLED, edge-curved display, with a staggering pixel density of 534 ppi! No, the pixel density is not a let down when compared with the S7’s 577 benchmark… it’s simply an outcome of the increase in screen size. And for those who nit-pic, 534 is incredibly detailed enough.
This is an unbelievably beautiful display unit which offers excellent colour reproduction and sharp contrasts, thanks to it’s Super AMOLED muscle.

Like the Galaxy S7, the Galaxy S7 edge too carries the new ‘Always On display’ which enables the phablet to continue displaying the clock, calendar and some notifications – all while the device is in Standby mode!
This alleviates the irritating dogleg of turning on the phone’s display just to see what time it is!

Since there’s glass on the front and the back of the S7 edge, both surfaces come coated with Corning Gorilla Glass 4 in an attempt to keep this smartphone scratch-free.

Not only are the front edges of the Galaxy S7 curved, now it’s back is curved too, which makes this device much easier to hold. Back to the front (whoa! thats a nice one here) – the curved edges at the front are similar to the one used on last year’s S6 edge, but better. This time, the curves disappear further around the side of the device, thus blessing with less bezel to see – which in turn, gives an even more immersive feel to the phone than before.

The edge display has thankfully been upgraded to include a few new features which allows you to get double-width information when you swipe in from the side of the screen. Instead of just weather and time updates, you can now get updates from your friends, football scores, news and even a compass and torch option. That said, the true potential of this increased floor space is yet to be fully realised and harnessed. And that’s more on the App Developers’ back, than just Samsung’s.

The Galaxy S7 edge runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow overlaid with Samsung’s own TouchWiz UI which has thankfully evolved over the past couple of years. Google’s Material Design seems to be the inspiration for the current avatar of the TouchWiz, and we are deeply grateful for that influence!

Under the hood, this phablet is powered by the same top-of-the-shelf quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset supported by an Adreno 530 dedicated graphics processor and 4 GB of RAM.

Storage: There are two internal storage options, 32 GB and 64 GB, both of  which can be expanded upto 200 GB via a microSD card slot (which uses the SIM 2 slot).

There’s an excellent 12 megapixel camera (f/1.7 aperture for excellent low light photos), phase detection autofocus, OIS and LED flash.
Like the Galaxy S7, the edge’s rear camera flaunts features such as geo-tagging, simultaneous 4K video and 9 megapixel image recording, touch focus, face/smile detection, auto HDR and panorama. It can also record 2160p videos.

At the front is a 5 megapixel unit, also with an f/1.7 aperture, dual video call and auto-HDR.

Other features on the S7 edge include: a highly accurate fingerprint sensor embedded into the Home button, fast battery charging (60% in 30 min), wireless charging and a non-removable 3600 mAh battery unit.

This smartphone is available in four attractive colors: Black, White, Gold, Silver.

We’ve saved one of the headline features of the S7 edge for the very end – its water resistant (the S6 edge wasn’t). Rated at IP68, this phablet and take on water upto 1.5 meters for a period of 30 minutes. That doesn’t mean you go swimming with it. But you can definitely dance in the rain with it, and selfie your heart out while doing that!
