In a crowded market, where every manufacturer is trying to outdo the other, newbie manufacturer Nextbit has launched it’s maiden smartphone, the Nextbit Robin, with the premise of being a ‘Cloud Phone’.

The play on Cloud Storability, proudly announced by the cloud symbol at the back, is the primary calling card of this device.

Created by ex-Google and ex-HTC veterans, Netbit clearly hopes to stand out with this solitary feature. The device offers 100 GB of cloud storage for free, on top of whatever internal flash-storage option you buy.

in case you’re finding it hard to wrap your head around how the Robin would handle apps on your device, here’s a brief.
You install apps like you would on any other device, and use it like any other device. However, any apps that are not used for a specific time period, are removed automatically from the device’s internal memory and shifted it to the cloud.

These apps’ icons then become greyed-out on your home screen, needing to be revived with a tap, which then retrieves the data from the cloud (and that too only happens over Wi-Fi when the Robin is plugged-in), to avoid using too much battery life or data.
Four little LED indicators on the back let you know about the progress of the sync process. While the apps shifted base from phone to cloud, the icons do remain and can cause a clutter and confusion and may need the effort to get used to.

On the hardware front, the Nextbit Robin is more or less, a regular smartphone. It uses a 5.2 inch 1080 p IPS LCD panel protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 4, and it appears that the device uses Adobe RGB style rather than sRGB, as the color rendition does not seem over-saturated.

Physically, while the sides are narrow, the huge top and bottom bezels really take their toll while watching videos or playing games and it appears that the dual speakers (with dual amplifiers) on either side of the screen are the perpetrators of this size-inflation.

Having seen its up close, we can tell you the Nextbit Robin may not be the most beautiful or inspired design out there (actually is quite far from it with its boxy design and plastic construct, however), its color options, Mint and Midnight, offer a very pleasant countenance to the device. The back is plain as day, apart from the rear camera and the flash sitting on top (and that Cloud icon).

The Robin comes with Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box with a Snapdragon 808 SoC, a hexa-core processor, and 3 GB RAM. It has 32 GB internal memory along with 100 GB cloud storage and is powered by a 2,680 mAh battery.

The Nextbit Robin does support Qualcomm Fast Charge 2.0, which will get you from empty to 80% in well under an hour. A fingerprint sensor offers security, which is a bit dodgy when compared to other device’s fingerprint scanner offerings in the marketplace.

The connectivity options offered are Bluetooth 4.0 LE, Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac and NFC and comes with USB Type C port.

We need to remember, this is a first-effort from Nextbit, and should they persevere, their next product might provide the flip that the brand needs.
