Clearly, Huawei has decided on upping the ante, and their first strike of the year, the Huawei Mate 9, is the ideal stroke.

Almost all the tech channels have been voting the Mate 9 as Huawei’s best phone yet, and we at Chip-Monks too, think the Chinese brand is playing it like never before. Their Huawei P9 from late last year was the first salvo that predicted Huawei’s mounting ambitions.

The 5.9 inch Mate 9 is a smooth ’n slick phone powered by the Kirin 960 processor that is considered the best Android chip in the market, beating Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 and 821, hands down.
Consequently, the processor and Android Nougat provide a calm yet mature experience.

While the device’s size might seem a bit out-of-hand at times, but mostly, it is still comfortable to use. One need not particularly think on the lines of Galaxy Note7, when thinking of large screen phones. The design of the the Mate 9 is simple, with all metal hardware and curved edges, and a great screen-to-body ratio of 78%.

What that means is that the front of the device is fairly well laid out, maximised for viewing experience with the screen dominating the front, without having unduly wasteful bezels hogging space (a la the iPhone 7).

The device’s big size provides enough space for the screen, making the LCD display look grand, so grand, that operating it with one hand is a tough deal now.

That said, the display’s 1080p resolution is a little bit of a let down though. A Full HD display, when put in line with the other features of the device, seems like a slight drawback. This will be quite evident when using a VR Headset.

Mate 9 sports the battery of its predecessor Mate 8, a huge 4,000 mAh and carries the USB Type-C port, which is capable of charging the phone in about 2 hours.

Huawei has incorporated a Leica-credited dual-camera setup which is capable of taking crisp pictures with insane details.
Huawei collaborated with Leica first for their model Huawei P9 thus becoming the first phone to come out with dual cameras in the rear, one capable of taking color pictures and the other Monochrome. Mate 9 own two-camera setup consists of one 12 megapixel colour sensor and the other being a 20 megapixel Black and White (monochrome) one. Both the rear sensors have a f/2.2 aperture with dual-LED flash and Optical image Stabilisation.

The camera app is perhaps the most extensively empowered feature on this phone with unaccounted number of options available to make your photos look better.

Security wise, the Mate 9 has a fingerprint sensor at the back just below the camera. Huawei has been known for providing fingerprint sensors that have the lowest reaction time in the marketplace (even when compared against the vaunted Samsung Galaxies and iPhones of the world)!

Storage wise, the Mate 9 sports a healthy 64 GB space with 4 GB RAM. This combination has apparently turned “generic” as almost the majority of the high-end smartphones come with this configuration. If the space does not suffice, it can be further extended up to 2 TB with a microSD Card.

Given that big screen, and all the metal, the Mate 9 comes in weighing around 190 grams, so it is a bit heavy.

This is indisputably Huawei’s best phone till now. Priced at somewhat INR 52,000, the phone is worth every penny, if you are looking for a hassle-free quality experience.
