Apple’s phablet series got it’s next stalwart, the iPhone 7 Plus in September 2016. It continues the family tradition of being the bigger screened, more powerful sibling, however is ageing in it’s looks and suffers from its familiarity. Looking a lot like its predecessors (the iPhone 6s Plus and iPhone 6 Plus) is playing against the image of being an upgrade.

While it does carry a few improvements over the 6s, one feels that the 7 Plus is just a holding page, till the next chapter is published. Apple seems to be holding back in 2016, and working on stuff that will only hit shelves in the next launch in 2017.

Editorialising over. Here are the facts.

The iPhone 7 Plus comes with the biggest change in its cameras – a custom-built Dual Camera unit that blends inputs from the conjoined duo, to provide realistic ‘bokeh’ or background blurring. Its powerful hardware and software allows for better zoom.

There’s a 12-megapixel wide-angle (ƒ/1.8 aperture) ‘regular’ rear camera and an independent 12-megapixels (ƒ/2.8 aperture) telephoto camera. This allows the iPhone 7 Plus to boast a 2x optical zoom with 10x digital zoom with capabilities of recording 1080p HD videos at 30 fps or 60 fps. The video capability includes time‑lapse video with stabilization, Cinematic video stabilization (1080p and 720p), and continuous autofocus video and Optical image stabilization for video.

At the front is a 7 megapixel, 32mm, f/2.2 selfie camera supported by Apple’s display based Retina Flash (introduced in the iPhone 6s).

The only other significant difference from the iPhone 7 (released along with the Plus) is that the Plus carries 3 GB RAM (another first for an iPhone).

Let us explore the other hardware and changes common to the eighth generation iPhone:

The A10 Fusion chip, Apple’s first processor that fuses the primary and motion coprocessors into a single unit, is a 64-bit unit that allows the iPhone 7 Plus to leverage 40% faster CPU performance and delivering 50% faster graphics performance over the previous iPhone.

Internally, the A10 is a four-core chipset that constitutes two high‑performance cores and two high‑efficiency cores, thus marrying performance while optimizing power requirements.

Next, the iPhone 7 Plus (like the iPhone 7) comes with an IP67 rating under IEC standard 60529, which translates to the device being dust and water resistance for full submersion in up to 1 meter of water for 30 minutes.

The Home Button has been redesigned and is now a touch sensitive unit backed by haptic feedback. The move away from a physical button may just be a segue into a complete glass front in the next iteration of the iPhone. For the time being, this touch-sensitive unit seems similar to the erstwhile physical button (and one often forgets that there’s been any change made!) however the difference is very apparent with use.

The passive 3.5 mm earphone jack has been culled. Wired earphones will now connect into the Lightning (charging) port directly or you can still use your old earphones with a 3.5mm jack using a custom-built adaptor included free of cost by Apple.

Additionally, Apple has improved the audio experience for their users by introducing true stereo sound by redesigning the earpiece to act as the second speaker.

Finally, the screen – it’s still a 5.5.inch IPS LCD Retina HD display (same as the iPhone 6s Plus), with 401 pixels per inch, however, there have been some minor improvements that make the screen brighter (625 cd/m2 max brightness) and make colors more vivid via improved color management.

Also, the range of internal memory capacity has moved. iPhone 7 Plus is available in 32 GB, 128 GB and an eye-watering 256 GB capacity, in SSD! To add to the droll, they now come in five colors: Silver, Gold, Rose Gold, Black and Jet Black (the last two being new inclusions).

So, what do we think? Well, between the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus, the latter makes more sense – with a larger screen, better resolution, better battery life and with stereo sound, it’s a great device to consume media and even create content on it, in a pinch.
